University Scholarships: About Dr. Douglas G. Pincock
Prior to founding Applied Microelectronics/AMIRIX Systems, Dr. Pincock, who has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, spent 12 years as a faculty member at the Technical University of Nova Scotia, the University of New Brunswick, the University of Paris and St. Francis Xavier University. During this time, he carried out leading edge research and developed innovative technology in digital system design and underwater acoustic telemetry which generated much interest and enthusiasm in the aquatic and marine research industry. Vemco of Shad Bay, Nova Scotia, a leading supplier of acoustic telemetry equipment whose products are now sold worldwide, is a direct spin-off of this research. (Vemco merged with AMIRIX in 2003 and is now a product division of AMIRIX.),
Dr. Pincock has served on a number of Boards including those of the Canadian Microelectronics Corporations, Samsys and Vemco, as well as advisory committees including the Canadian Intellectual Property Organization Advisory Board and the Nova Scotia Council on Applied Science and Technology. In 1998, he received the CATA Alliance's National Award of Distinction in private sector leadership.
Dr. Pincock's ties to academia are also firmly entrenched in AMIRIX, which recruits top notch talent in the fields of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from area universities to ensure it remains a leading provider of electronic design services. Since its inception, AMIRIX has hired numerous students through co-op and intern programs and many of these students have gone on to become full-time employees upon graduation.
Dr. Pincock was President & CEO of AMIRIX until February 2000. He still provides strategic technical, business and marketing direction on a daily basis and is also Chairman of the Board. In 1999, AMIRIX and the Canadian Microelectronics Corporation were jointly awarded a Synergy Award from NSERC and the Conference Board of Canada for their successful partnerships in promoting research into microchip technologies and the development of new chips, and in training the next generation of microelectronics researchers. In 2001, AMIRIX was named by the Conference Board of Canada as the Top Employer of Youth for the province of Nova Scotia and was also chosen by Atlantic Progress as one of the Top Ten Places to Work in Atlantic Canada.
